That BIG legend
« on: March 02, 2008, 07:32:00 am »

I don't know if this has been mentinoed before, because I didn't know which string to look for in the forums :/

Anyway, since Toady mentioned at some point we will be able to "stop the clock" and start playing before year 1050, maybe he could put in a new feature: The counting of years starts from some very big happening that is randomly generated and marks the beginning of year 1. For example: Goblins fell a human capital, the kingdom fell, and humans from that big kingdom had to escape for the mountains.

Yes, I know, the example wasn't very exciting, but I think you get the idea. It wouldn't be a game-breaking implementation, but in my opinion it could add a bit of flavor to each new world, and maybe have consequences on the future of it.

Something like Event Zero?

Would have to be a pretty big bang to set history in motion.
However, I think DF is better off with history starting at a predefined point, like when the first intelligent races appear on the map.

Unless we get a chance to "resume worldgen" after we tamper around in the first ages...

Resuming worldgen?

Hmmm...

*Imagines the wreaking havoc with everyone except the goblins with a companion-boosted adventurer and then letting it run loose for a few dozen years in worldgen*

Me likey! :3

Amazing idea! Really, this should be implemented. Resuming worldgen I mean.

What would be cool is if you could go back to maybe 800 and slaughter hundreds of goblins, and then in the future they engraved about their hatred.

Well, when the army arc rolls through, you could create yourself a civilzation of demons that lives a maximum of 500 years with a set number of couples. If they are powerful enough they will rule the land for 500 years and then suddenly die out, leaving ruins and artifacts. Their age might be called "The Age of Demons" or whatever you name their race.

Actually, I thought I remember reading somewhere in the dev reqs and/or bloats that we eventually be able to play in the age of legends.

There won't be an Age of Legends in the next release. The names of ages are now dynamically created.

I think the calendar starts ( Year 1 ) as the first time an elf bitched at a dwarf about cutting down tree.
