Marksdwarf does not want to shoot
« on: March 27, 2010, 05:33:37 am »

I have a pair of "marksdwarves". I first trained them up to professional wrestlers then got them to switch over to using crossbows. One decides to go the conventional route, and use the crossbow as a ranged weapon. The other, however, decides it is much more efficient to use it as a mace. There are 2 archery targets to train at, plenty of ammo, he has a quiver equipped, yet he simply refuses to use it for anything apart from bashing rabbit heads in. Anyone got any ideas of what may be wrong? I've tried everything I could think of.

Check his inventory for anything in his hands. Odds are he acquired a piece of armor from his opponent at some point. Also, if he is carrying metal ammo he may not have room to pick up wood/bone training ammo.

To be sure your dwarf really has dropped everything, set everything in his hands to dump so other dwarves will come and take it away. Then make sure the following conditions are met:

1) You have an available shooting range of adequate size.
2) You have wooden or bone ammo available for training.
3) The dwarf is in the military and has been told to use a crossbow.
4) The dwarf's squad is not on duty.

You need to designate every Archery Target as a room individually, it doesn't work like tables where all other tables in the same room are counted in the room too.

You think I would forget something so simple? :P I had done -everything- I could think of, but he just does not want to shoot. Guess he really likes melee.

Try making some more marksdwarves, and seeing if any others have this same problem.

It would help if you could confirm it is this dwarf.

Check to see if he's actually holding someone else's sock or greaves or something in his hand.  He won't drop it just because you tell him to, you actually have to designate the item for dumping, and another dwarf will come along and relieve him of it.

All the gear he is holding is his own, I have 7 other marksdwarfs and yes it is definitely the one stubborn dwarf. He doesn't have any injuries preventing the use of the crossbow (or any at all) and he would happily run around with a quiver, he just never picked up any bolts. Must be scared of them. On another strange note, he hasn't gained any experience as a macedwarf either, even with 12 kills under his belt. Maybe he is stuck as a wrestler somehow?

... Umm... Maybe it's just time to leave a bug report?  I'm not coming up with much of a way to answer this.

Maybe go into Dwarf Companion, and view this guy for anything that looks weird or out of place.

I know that I once opened up DC, and found that one of my stonecarvers who never went anywhere remotely dangerous had no injuries, but somehow was bleeding, anyway.  It may be that your dwarf has invisible injuries... but I think it more likely that there is some sort of lingering command placed on this dwarf, like that he already believes he is holding bolts, even though he doesn't have anymore, so he refuses to pick any up, even though the game otherwise recognizes he has none in his inventory.

...While this might be obvious, my experience in Dwarven Psychology tells me that he wants a hammer.
