wielding very heavy objects
« on: March 26, 2010, 08:26:32 pm »

Perhaps this should go in modding, since it relates to that, but here it is:

I was wanting to create a weapon somewhere in between the crossbow and the ballista - something that was aimable like a normal weapon, and that wasn't auto-death for anything in its path, but that couldn't be easily toted around like a normal weapon...

So I made a "heavy crossbow" that is RIDICULOUSLY heavy - the wooden version weighs 7000.  Dwarves can (and do) haul objects that heavy, they just do so very slowly.... but when I try to have this weapon used, it gets repeatedly picked up dropped, dozens of times.  Eventually, I find that it is being wielded and carried (slowly, as intended), but I didn't see any particular reason why it changed - the same dwarf that before had picked it up (I saw it in his inventory, with "multi-grasp" as how it was held) and dropped it, walked 2-4 spaces away and then returned to "pickup equipment", dozens of times while I watched now had it in his possession and was just moving very slowly.

Anybody have any ideas what's going on with that?

dwarves can only wield weapons up to a certain size.
Also, dwarves can only wield weapons above a certain size (and below that other certain size) when told they are allowed to do it two-handedly, in the [m]ilitary menues.

[edit] but rereading it seems you thought of that. I have no clue what's up with that.

Toady typically doesn't do things by half measures.  As evidenced by turning "make hauling work better" into "implement mine carts with physics".
There are many issues with this statement.

It has the same wielding requirements as a normal crossbow, it just does more damage (actually, it's ammo does more damage....) and is VERY heavy.

If it was being wielded "Multigrasp", then you did make it two-handed.

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

Maybe the dwarf's stats weren't high enough to carry it at first, but the pickup attempts strengthened them? Maybe? I dunno, do stats work like that? Can you train idle folks up by making them carry rocks?

No, stats are increased through gaining skills.

Bloody crap, somehow the file got reverted (that was something I messed with when I very first tried this, a couple of months ago).  I've fixed it, and I'll test again...  but still, he eventually did walk off with it, which is weird...
