Making dwarves immortal after world gen?
« on: March 28, 2010, 03:02:52 pm »

So I've heard that making dwarfs immortal before world gen causes problems because they take over the world, but I would like to play my hermit challenge without worry of the hermit dying.  I play with FPS uncapped so a year goes by fairly quickly.

Would removing the MAXAGE tag from dwarf raws and regenerating data/objects (after world gen) effectively make my fortress mode dwarfs immortal?  Does every dwarf have a age at which it dies (generated at birth), or does it check some sort of old_age_death routine every year within the MAXAGE range?

If you want your dwarf to be immortal but all the others to be normal, leave the MAXAGE until after world gen. Then remove it, and it'll only affect your dwarves. And the age at which dwarves or any mortal creature die is a random number between the two values of MAXAGE.

In all honesty though, this really isn't that huge of an issue.  Dwarves live anywhere between 150 and 170 years, so unless "fairly quickly" means about fifteen seconds, You don't have that much to worry about.

...of course, it's difficult to say how old a dwarf is when you first get them.  And, of course, there's nothing wrong with wanting the blighter to last a bit longer for your own purposes.

Well, I started to get worried when the fortress got up to 50 year mark.

Let your dwarves start to die from old age.  It could lead to fun times.

You need to make said elf leather into the most amazing work of art.  Embed it with every kind of gem you have, stud it with metals, and sew images into it.  Erect a shrine outside your fort with that in the center.  Let the elves know that you view their very skin as naught more but a medium for your dwarves to work on.

Well, when you've only got one to lose...  The "fun" doesn't last particularly long.

And yeah, if you're already at fifty, then I really can't say you're overreacting.  As was mentioned, there's no way of telling just how old some of these dudes are.

As for doing the hermit thing, I wish you luck in your endeavor.  Just remember not to build any beds...  I learned that one the hard way.
