In my failing attempts to get my champion ax dwarf to use my artifact chain mail and shield i've wound up with him wearing chain mail and platemail at the same time. Is that normal?

Wearing chain and plate mail at the same time is both beneficial and intended, you know. Most players do it.

Yeah, it is actually common to wear a chain tunic beneath plate armors.  Likewise, it is common to wear leather tunic beneath chain.

Well, I don't tend to do it myself, but I like trying to get my dwarfs to do it.
