I treed a dragon
« on: March 27, 2010, 05:52:09 pm »

As seen here:

He's been stuck on top of a tree for more than a season, unconscious. I don't know how it happened. When he arrived, his only injury was a missing leg, but now he's up there with a mangled lower body. My theory: he was flying over the trees, lost consciousness due to phantom limb pain, and impaled himself on the treetop.

I need some ideas on how to have fun with this. Unfortunately I won't be able to get any civilian dwarves to go near him to chop down the tree (and even if I could, it's my recollection that there's a bug that would leave him suspended in midair).

If you figure out the civilian thing, you could build a bridge out to him.

Dragons can't fly, so it's likely your military knocked him there by luck or something. And the bug doesn't affect you; it only happens when a creature is in falling mode (ie. light-blue background) and you save the game. A guy had a treed goblin a while ago; he cut down the tree and the goblin just fell onto the ground I believe. But you could probably do something amusing with this.

You can intentionally tree a captured dragon, too. I recently had the idea for a "dragon-fall trap" - you'd have a 1-wide corridor with a door in it, and a dragon sitting on top of the door. Whenever a kobold opened the door... ;D (Assuming it works, anyway.)

Yeah, I wish I would get attacked by more megabeasts.

Not sure how he got up there, because my military never went near him. Perhaps some wild animal put him there--I do have a few batmen still scattered around the map. The whole thing is a bit confusing to me.

Perhaps the tree grew up from under him? They can be sneaky like that, you know.

I'm pretty sure trees will wait for an empty tile before growing, otherwise, we'd get 'Urist McWorkerscompwillneverbelievethis has been crushed by a Tower Cap!' messages.

Yeah, you're right. I was just being silly :P I don't have the slightest clue either.

Seriously though, watch out for trees. They'll get you.

If the civvy dwarves won't get close enough to chop down the tree, fire a ballista at it. That will kill the tree from a distance.

Hope it helps.

It's not an embark so much as seven dwarves having a simultaneous strange mood and going off to build an artifact fortress that menaces with spikes of awesome and hanging rings of death.

If the civvy dwarves won't get close enough to chop down the tree, fire a ballista at them. That will show the other dwarfs what you think of cowards.

Hope it helps.
Fixed your post for you.

You could also probably collapse the ground out from under it, though you might have to collapse a really big area to get around the civilian issue.

The goblin I had treed didn't survive the act of being treed.  So it was significantly easier to cut down the tree.  And that dragon is red instead of green, so it might be modded to be able to fly.

As for getting rid of the tree you could undermine the 3x3 surrounding the tree with ramps to take it out.   Take e bit of micro and some planning to make sure the miners won't be able to see the dragon while digging, but it shouldn't be too hard.

As for finding a use for something this awesome, I can't help ya there.
