Valley Of Death
« on: March 27, 2010, 10:57:12 pm »

The topic name is a bit misleading, I admit. What I mean is that I have a long 3-tile-wide walled-off corridor leading to my fortress. I want to have it be horrendous and totally intraversable. I'm making several weapon traps at the beginning with scourges and iron spears and such to soften up any ambushes, and I have 40+ cage traps later on. I also have this epic long corridor with ballistas at the end, and a platform packed with ammo above it, to gun down anything that comes through (There's an open entrance, so if anything lives they can just walk in, but my Army Corps of engineers will be manning the siege and they have great stats).

I'm planning to wall off the tops of the walls, and put floors on it, so that my marksdwarves can walk on top of the corridor and shoot goblins who approach. However, I also want to have holes in said floor, so that my marksdwarves can kill whatever walks underneath without risking getting hurt themselves. Where should I put these murder holes? Checkerboarding them seems like it might have potential for bowgoblins to hit my marksdwarves from far away, which destroys the whole point of them. But I want to have as many as possible.

hohohoooo. A splendid idea, I must say. You'd better be using Dig Deeper, for extra Fun. Fortifications behind channels are good defense. I think that dwarves can shoot through floor hatches, or maybe it's floor bars.
Magma is a fun thing for a trap as well, I remember a magma corridor that someone created. It cycled all the magma from down to up. Used floor bars and could be shut off.

your hoard, your dwarves, and your fortress.
I prefer Hoard, Horde, and Hovel...

Man, everyone in my fortresses die left and right, I don't have enough food, goblins kill all the people wandering outside, etc. I'm not ready for Dig Deeper...

The problem is, fortifications behind channels let the best marksgoblins shoot back. Hatches/grates sound good though.

Two things:

1. You mentioned using spears in weapon traps to soften up your invaders. In my experience, that won't so much soften up your goblins, it will outright annihilate them. Unless you're only use one spear per trap, but even then I think it would be too deadly for your stated purposes. Using scourges, however, is a good idea.

2. If you care about your headcount (if safely and/or quickly breaking the siege are your only priorities, then the following is not just useless but positively counterproductive), make sure your corridor is long and there's quite a bit of distance between the entrance and your first traps. That's because as soon as maybe 1/4 or 1/5 of your goblins hit the dirt, the rest will try to flee. I'd even recommend floodgates at your entrance so you can cut off your invaders' retreat.

The biggest danger is the marksgoblins. A winding corridor helps with that amazingly.
