Beak Dog Trap
« on: March 28, 2010, 12:06:54 pm »

Ok, so a strip of my map is a evil marsh or whatever, and it has beak dogs. They follow the same path, from north to south down the strip, every season or so. I want to trap them, and I was wondering if this would work:

**********
****++****
****|X|****
****|X|****
***--.--***
***|.....|***
***|..B..|***
***|.....|***
***--.--***
****|X|****
****|X|****
****++****
**********

Key:
* Grass
.  Floor 1 z-level down
+ Ramp
B Bait Animal
X Trap

So basically, the bait animal is in a 3x3 square pit with no roof and there are 2 paths down full of cages. Would the beak dogs attack? Would the bait animal be able to be killed? Should the pit be 5x5?

You should use the [code] tag to make it easier to read, and so it lines up properly. Like this:

Code: [Select]
     +++
     |X|
     |X|
   ---.---
   |.....|
   |..B..|
   |.....|
   ---.---
     |X|
     |X|
     +++

Key:
  Grass
.  Floor 1 z-level down
+ Ramp
B Bait Animal
X Trap

If they follow the same path every season, couldn't you just put cage traps there?

If I wanted ramps I would've designated ramps, dammit!

I agree with immibis.  Just build something like this along their path:

Code: [Select]
    W
    W
    W
WWWW^WWWW
    W
    W
    W

W= wall
^= trap

It isnt a perfectly identical path, just a general 'route that they follow.

I agree with the cross trap when I do it I always add traps in the 4 inner corners as well, like so:
    W
    W
   ^W^
WWWW^WWWW
   ^W^
    W
    W

W= wall
^= trap

This makes it so that you don't have a whole lot of them just walk by but you need to once the traps are set forbid the cages so that when one activates a dwarf doesn't just run out and get murderized.

edit: if they always go from one direction to the others the say up to down just have this:

   ^^^
WWWW^WWWW
   ^^^

W= wall
^= trap

and extend it across the screen with occasional trap filled breaks.

So it seems I accidentally put my canteen in my wheelbarrow and didn't notice... and then I got really thirsty... so right before going to sleep I go to take a swig from my canteen and... end up snorting a line of low-grade meth.
