Champions don't shoot
« on: March 26, 2010, 12:57:02 pm »

Hello,

the following problem occured twice so far and I really would like to get it solved somehow: my Champions, who are equipped with crossbows and are holding bone bolts in their hands, are not training at the shooting range. I had it with my last fortress that only one of those guys trained his archery skills, but even him did it only reluctantly. Are there any suggestions what might be the reason for this behaviour?

Thanks a lot!

Sometimes this happens to me after they were trained in wrestling first. They tear off their sparing partners clothes and leave it in their hands. They can't train with crossbows while holding clothes in their hands. Set them to unarmed, no shield, and no armor. Let them drop everything they have. Now reset their armor and weapon. That always fixed it for me. This works when they aren't training with any weapon not just crossbows.

Don't forget they won't train with metal bolds, and the archery range needs to be sufficiently large enough from the firing spot to the target depending on what direction it is facing.

If they wrestle they can pick up things and if they're holding anything but a shield in their hands they cannot pick up ammo.

Set them to use a crossbow and shield, but no armor at all. They will drop everything else.

Armor is also pretty useless in combat, its all about wrestling to dodge and shields to block. A naked double legendary at wrestling and shields, using only a shield and a weapon but no armor at all, is invincible anyways.

They will also move faster without armor on, so your guys can reload faster and hurl more hot lead downrange.

Also you don't really need to have them train at an archery range. Just train them up as wrestlers and shield users. Once they hit legendary order them to drop all equipment so they're naked, then pick up a bow, shield, and put them on their duty station. Live fire training is vastly more effective than target practice. They will become legendary marksdwarves within just a few sieges.

Also, skilled dwarves train less, so if you're trying to train champions up it'll be slow going anyway.

Yep, they did train wrestling first. And I already suspected them to be a bit reluctant due to their experience in wrestling. Anyway, I checked their inventary, set them to unarmed naked and back again, and will now wait and see. If they still refuse to use the range, I might come back.

Thanks so far!

armor helps , you don't even need to train up in order to use armor properly , plus , it adds another block roll , which makes it better if combined with a shield

also , everyone just stole what i was going to say
