DF Affirmative Action and Workplace Racism
« on: March 25, 2010, 04:25:56 pm »

I love my Dwarven Civilization the Dented Theater.  We are at war with the elves, enslaved them and created a set of lower class citizenry that can work their way up in the world the Dwarfy way.  Take for example my Liaison.  He's come far from a lowly scraggly Elven schmuk to a proper Liaison through the Dented Dummies Affirmative Action program.

Unfortunately, though, there is work place racism within the caravan he travels.  Every year I have to watch as the caravan pulls into the depot at my entrance while he tries to dodge around the guards who wish to show their "love" through stabbing.

Now I don't know how this happened and normally I'm all for the pointy ears on pointy stakes fun time program.  But ARMOK BE DAMNED!  I need that pointy eared little freak to order Nickel and Silver.  He's a damn good fighter and murdered the entire caravan before he got put down wagons and all.  Two caravan guards survived and fled for their lives afterwards.  I couldn't believe inter civilization racism.  It was like the Rodney King beating reversed.

And this is why I love this game even if I have to save scum to save my liaison.

Nice. It seems for me that most of my dwarven liaisons are all elves. Must be my luck. They all come with full stats. I admire their work. They don't mind all the wood cutting, which is good. They have been accepted into dwarven society.

You do not understand the ways of Toady One. He is not a business, he's just a guy trying to make a fun game. He's invited people to come along and experience the journey with him (and help him test it out as he goes along). At the end of the day, I don't think his main goal is to sell Dwarf Fortress, its just to create the best game possible.

If your elf is badass enough to kill almost an entire caravan worth of guards, he is dwarven enough.  I say you should place guards at the normal place the caravan enters the map from every autumn (say an underground tunnel to a guard outpost) and keep him alive.  Unless your dwarves attack him too.  Then you're just screwed.

So of all the things you can do in DF, it's the fractal artifacts that make you think dwarves are crazy.

Never mind the magma falls, the atom smashers, the cog-and-axle turing-complete computers, or the colonizing of Hell itself... all those are fine, but man, those recursive artifacts! Where do they get such ideas?

Agreed. I wonder why the guards attacked him.

This confuses me too.  >:(  However, my dwarves don't attack him.  Just the caravan guards if he gets close enough.  Thank Armok.  It's just ridiculous how scared he is of the caravan guards.  As soon as he gets close he turns right back around.  Lately I've been having a lot of goblin ambushes though so I'm worried about him getting caught by a lucky crossbow bolt.

You should make a guard that specifically stands by him to make sure he doesn't die.

Make two entrances, one three wide for the wagons and one 1 wide for the elf, if possible have the wagon entrance restrict the entry point to only that path (underground road, bridges, walls/channels) and if possible have it come in from a different map edge than that caravan normally comes in on. This will cause the wagon and guards to spawn on a different edge than the liaison (well the pack animal merchants and there guards might still spawn with the liaison), allowing him to come in a back door away from the guards. This will mean that you will have two entrances to defend though.

Not necessarily, I think I read a topic once where someone found out that you can build ramps with no walls behind them that wagons can access but invaders can't...
