Question on magma pressure

Say I had an area like this: (side view)
P~
  ~  W      W
~~~W  _  W
~~~~~~~~

P= pump
~= magma
W= wall
_= channel in floor

The magma won't rise up through the channel, right? Or has that changed? I'd check the wiki but it's a bit cactus.

No. Magma is never pressurized unless it passes through a screw pump (in which case it rises up to the level of the pump)

No. Magma is never pressurized unless it passes through a screw pump (in which case it rises up to the level of the pump)

He is using a pump though.

The question to this answer came to me in a fun way :)

As long as the pump is turned on, magma is pressurized and will rise to the level of the pump.
So if you turn the pump off nothing will happen :)

It'll probably end up on the floors.
Water might not, because if there's a bunch of water sitting on the ramps and more water falls onto it, that water would pressure pathfind downward.
Magma sitting on ramps would just provide a platform for other magma to flow across onto the floors.

Could anyone do a test of this for me? I need a 4 z-level drop of a single tile flow of magma onto something similar to what I drew above. I just need to find out how far away from the magma the floor needs to be.

don't know off the top of my head, but I'd put the floors at least 2 tiles from the ramps, also to keep your dwarves safe from magma mist (unless you're intending for horrific melting deaths)

I fed my magmaworks from a volcano, and there where no mist.

Magma poured out of the holes while the pumps where working, but stopped as I turned of the pumps.
( and it actually went about 20 z levels :)

I am right now building a pressurized magma mine-trap with the same basics :)

Water mist is formed from falling down stairs and such, but magma mist is formed from dropping stuff into it, otherwise your fine, so no lethal mist for you!

that'd make a nice magma trap, steel grates above that channel as your way into the fort.

Magma is never presurized so it won't rise to fill it's top level.  Fluid coming out of a pump is pressurized and will pressure path to fill it's top level, but the magma itself is not pressurized.  It's an important, but subtle distinction.
