This crazy couple has been popping out daughters pretty much constantly, this is from a fort just a smidgen over four years old.



She's nearly always dual-wielding babies. Is there some sort of variable that makes some couples more likely to have kids? This is a fort of about a hundred and there are plenty of couples, but it seems that save for migrant kids this is the only ones procreating.

Well, he IS a planter 

Actually, it's probably because they both have a lot of free time on their hands.  She's a Champion, so she's probably sparring and socializing.  He's a farmer, and my farmers usually have a lot of free time.  Put them together, and you've got a married couple with a lot of free time to spend together, resulting in a lot of babies.

Of course, due to the fact that cats (the race in question) also mature very quickly, all of her children are currently adults... But I'm expecting her to give birth again fairly soon. Unfortunately, she and her husband are the only married couple in the fort and I've not been getting many migrants, so they're basically the only source of more manpower I've got. Still, 19 kids is rather impressive, no?

It will take your first seven dwarves a little time before any of them get married, mostly because they'll be doing fortress critical work instead of socializing.

Migrants have 2 big advantages.
1. They can come to the fortress married.
2. They usually don't have very demanding jobs beyond "hauler."

They will marry if you give them one or two seasons off. I usually play without immigration (maximum population = 1), so married couples are my only source of new working forces. All of these married couples breed like rabbits, with one child per year on average. In my current fortress, it's 4 breeding couples and 29 children. The fortress is in its 9th year.

Slower breeding pairs do happen sometimes, but I haven't quite figure out yet what makes them so reluctant. Also, some pairs seem to lose the breeding spirit after the 9th child or so.


Anyway, my all time favourite scene was when the leader dwarf at one point gave birth to a baby... while being in the middle of a meeting with the liaison. That liaison had a blood spatter in his right eye afterwards.

Impressive in an annoying way.  My last two mayors and one long dead countess had each produced at least one page of offspring (no mods).  Most dwarfs in my fort were blood relatives for a while there. Killing more than one child at a time was dangerous in my fort because of all the damned "lost a sibling" thoughts.

The countess in particular... She was demanding Bismuth items, something I can't make, and needed to die.  I attempted to kill her twice and ended up in inescapable tantrum spirals.  The third time (I savescummed because I can't afford to re-embark again!) it took a year until dwarfs stopped going mad.

DF needs deportation.

I'm almost positive I've seen it happen before. Not 100% since most of my forts don't make it till the children mature. Also didn't flarechannel have numerous aunt and uncle relationships?

I've seen it happen before. Two forts ago, my woodcutter/carpenter and mechanic married, and both were the children of 4 of the starting 7.
