Hermit Challenge with a twist
« on: March 21, 2010, 07:29:36 am »

I've never really done a story before but I decided to try and make a recorded hermit challenge starting with a simple message:  Only when one is alive, may one leave the caravan...

I'll wall in the caravan with basic supplies, food, booze, seeds and a pick. I'll wall in the caravan and when all but one are dead, that one will break down the wall and will begin the challenge with the few remaining supplies. They will then go about recording the things that happen and keeping himself or herself alive until I build a migrant trap to kill all who dare try to pass! Let the challenge commence!

Oh, and also, because of my inability to get images right, there won't be any screenshots until I figure out how to get them to work properly...

And I also need help with a problem, the forum is making it hard to write, I can't write at all without the screen jumping to the top of my message...

1st Granite, 20, Early spring

Well, we finally arrived at our destination, Routedsabres, we brought the wagon but then a stange force compelled one of us to build a wall round the wagon, crazy, crazy people...

Good idea, but you're aware that they'll proceed to eat all the supplies in the wagon before even thinking about dying?
Your output would be a dehydrated hungry dwarf which will proceed to hunt for vermin. But such is Dwarf Fortress, and dwarves are expendable. I approve.

25th Slate, 20, Mid-Spring

People are beginning to get hungry, before the wall was sealed, all the food and booze was taken out by another man in out group, I fear for our lives...

EDIT: Oh carp, I didn't realise that if I took all the food out that EVERYONE would die at the exact same time... I'll need to think this through again...

For screenshots, make sure DF is the selected window, then hit Alt-Printscreen.  With that done, open up an image file using some editing program (whatever you've got, doesn't need much).  You can now "paste" the image of DF into the program, and then save it off.

Alternatively, use this.

As for the message jumping, I think I may know what's doing that.  Are you using Internet Explorer?  If so, turn on "old page compatibility" or whatever the heck it's called.  It's a Microsoft fix for a Microsoft problem.

Alternatively, use a different browser.

Alternatively, use a different browser.

I suggest Google Chrome, it works amazingly.

As for your idea that all might die at the same time; I'm not so sure of that. I would suggest at least keep trying what you're doing, and if they do all die at the same time, well then some other changes might need to be done (i.e. in embark, just bring along one piece of meat, for example)

also, if you want to keep just a few supplies left for the surviving dwarf, forbid them until you're ready to use them. might be easier than removing them to some other place

No, you don't get it, I put all the supplies outside, walled up the gap and got lunch, when I came back, the dwarves were all hungry but none were dead, the next moment I got "your fortress has crumbeled to its end"
But yeah, I'll just keep 1 piece of food on the inside and leave the rest outside, that way, only one dwarf will get food and that dwarf will become the hermit!  Now LET THE HERMIT CHALENGE COMMENCE! again...

1st Granite. 21. Early spring.
Dear diary,
We just arrived at our new settlement, Castlespatter! We have plenty of food to keep us going and drink to keep us moving! Happy, happy, happy...

16th Granite. 21. Early spring.
Dear diary,
Oh, carp, Shem just went into a strange mood and built a wall around us, what shall we do? Even worse, almost all the food was outside that area! we only have a barrel of beer and a scrap of dog meat between us, this is bad... We also heard a strange voice today. It came out of the sky deep and booming, it told us this: "Only when one is left, may one leave." I'm scared...
