Installing Firmware on my Router
« on: March 22, 2010, 05:02:32 pm »

So, my current router is horrible. It works, but it has such a low signal and goes offline all the time. When reading up on reviews on Newegg, however, I came across the fact that this router is highly moddable and is best used when upgraded with homebrew firmware. Tomato was highly recommended.

I know from experience and stories told to me from my dad that firmware upgrades can go awry. I am afraid of bricking my router, but after constantly having to fix the router (I have to reboot it manually about once a month) I'm tired and ready for something that works. My question is, should I upgrade my router? And if I should, what are the chances of the router being bricked?

Seriously, no replies?

It went down yesterday and today. I am seriously tired of fixing it.

I've been using Tomato on my WRT54-GL for a couple of years now. I don't think I've restarted it for at least six months, and that was an accident, but it still runs perfect. It's never crashed, and the response times are a thousand times better than the stock firmware.

The installation process was easy and largely foolproof. I understand that there are also things you can do to recover bricked routers, so it isn't completely irrevocable.

I don't know what else to say.

I think it's a vastly amusing thought that elephants are so afraid of heights that when Dwarves invented the Z-axis, they couldn't bear to face dwarves in combat anymore.
