Add an init option for whether pools dry up
« on: March 01, 2008, 12:18:00 am »

Until pool refilling (presumably when the wet season rolls around again) is implemented it would be nice to have an init option to disable the drying up of pools in the summer.

I'm more for fixing underlying problems rather than adding in workarounds until they are fixed.   That said, this 'problem' seems like it'd be just as easy to work on as it would to add in the init kludge.

Pond refilling is already in, it just doesn't seem to work... at all.  Haven't looked at it yet.  Incidentally, this topic appeared as "Add an init option for whether poo..." on the forum's main page, so I thought it was another one of those threads.

Yeah, it's very irritating when I permanently run out of water. I could rely on booze, but in the future that will require water too...

I have a fort where pool-refilling works.  They are full most of the year, do not dry up, but they will fill up on their own if I empty them.  It's probably just limited to too-specific biomes.

Toady, do you want?

I heard rumors that snow refills ponds...

Freezing, there's even a 1/7 of water, will make a block, which when it melts, will become a brand new 7/7. Which is good. But if it don't freeze, it can't refill.

Also in some scorching/hot maps, water dries up, and others it's already dried up. I wonder if that distinction is what is needed for the pools to refill.

I'm guessing that in any location where ponds evaporate on their own they can't get refilled because they evaporate faster than they refill. Perhaps a greater temperature variance between season would help? It wouldn't be very realistic, but I wouldn't mind it if it worked.

If you don't want a pool to dry up, you can always cover it.

By the way, I wonder, if a drawbridge is used for that, will it be possible to raise the bridge to let rain fill the pond, then lower it to prevent the heat from vaporizing the water?
