Hey everyone, it's been awhile since I posted, but this up coming release really gets the imagination moving. I think my favorite aspect of the whole thing is the blending of Adventurer/fortress modes, and was thinking a good source for quests that go beyond the scope of "go here, kill *it* and come back" would be tying the semi-artifacts in to dwarves who settle in other towns but leave things behind at the abandoned fort. "Go to *dead fortress* and retrieve my favorite pair of pants/sword/leather boot" wouldn't be much different than what exists, but it would add an extra level of interest to exploring forts and give a second kind of quest to accomplish while, at the same time, add a reason to talk to those random dwarves you find hanging around. Since the game seems to track all those things (though I'm talking only as an observer and not at all as a coder) it doesn't seem like it'd be that far off the mark in terms of possibilities, and then this could extend to other realms as well: "Retrieve the artifact "Ghosthump the Dark Bucket, the legendary Bin" for the local town mayor or kin. Then you've got to decide if you want to bring it back to person A or B or C or sell the thing to a shop keeper and buy a nice fancy suit of platemail. This idea itself then falls into the "ongoing war" idea and player groups as actors in the world, but that seems a little further off.
Additionally, you could have someone who is obsessed with, say, steel long swords, and just wants you to bring them as many as you can find throughout the world. Who knows what the rewards could be, I guess it would depend on the Questers (?) position in their society.
I think it would add depth to the background characters in a town and to the adventuring in general.
