This stupidity is astounding. Help?
« on: March 26, 2010, 04:58:41 pm »

I've got a forge set to making steel bars. Here's an example of what's going on:
Urist McForger brings iron bar to the forge.
Urist McForger runs off to get pig iron or flux.
Urist McDumbasshauler grabs iron bar and brings it back to the stockpile.

Repeat that for every single step, included with Urist McForger running back to get the iron again. It's massively hurting my steel production, he'll manage to outrun the haulers maybe once out of every 10 attempts and finally get a bar made. Is there any way to still have a stockpile set up for iron/pig iron and NOT have my dumbass haulers try to take it back to the stockpile after he brings it to the forge?

Then everything near it exploded in a cloud of blood.

This shouldn't happen.  An item tasked for use in a job should not be able to be moved to a stockpile.  Unless Urist McForger is canceling the job in the middle, possibly to go eat or drink or something, Urist McDumbasshauler shouldn't be able to touch the iron bar.

In the unit list it says "Make steel bars" next to his name, so he's clearly still doing the job, yet the hauler still insists on grabbing the bar. This is getting pretty damn annoying.

Try turning on all job cancellation announcements, see if he's canceling the job for some reason.  Otherwise this is a bug, since that iron bar should be set to be tasked and untouchable by haulers.  Next time Urist McForger drops off the iron bar at the smelter, press (t) and look at the smelter.  You should see the iron bar there, and you should see it 'TSK' next to it.  if Urist McForger hasn't canceled the job for any reason, but the bar isn't set to 'TSK', you have found a bug and should report it on the bug report forums.

I agree that it shouldn't be happening, but since it apparently IS happening create some stockpiles for iron and flux next to the forge.

It does say TSK next to it... maybe the AI just glitched out for a second and he stopped and immediately went back to it or something... and Scarpa, I actually do have an iron/pig iron stockpile next to it. I haven't carved out a flux stockpile, but I was considering it.

No flux near the forge, that is likely your problem just allow flux stone to be added to your ore stockpiles(that's is asuming you have ore stockpiled near your smelters). For the sake of speed this is what my bar/ore/smithing area looks like.
Code: [Select]
bbbbbbbsssoooooooo
bbbbbbbsssoooooooo
bbbbbbbsssoooooooo
bbbbbbbfffoooooooo
bbbbbbbfffoooooooo
bbbbbbbfffoooooooo
b=bar stock pile s= smelter f= forge and o= ore stock pile with economic stone(flux and coal)

This is a masterful image of your FPS and the HFS. The HFS is committing a depraved act on your FPS.

As long as the object is TSKed for something it should never be moved away.

Is your smith canceling due to hunger? Naptime? Thirsty? Fire imp? Magma level dip too low?
