Sand Blocks

For this idea, you could use a mason's workshop to shape sand into build-able blocks. These blocks could be made by hardening sand with water and smoothing it down with a mason's tools. Then, you'd have an infinite building material source if you live in a desert.
The mason's workshop would also include a "Gather Sand" order, just like a Glass maker's Workshop. It would basically be the same thing, except designated from a mason's workshop.

The idea of making building material out of soil is fine, but.... saliva? Seriously?

Only to harden the sand. You don't want shifting walls, do you?

Are they cliff-dwelling birds or something, building nests out of their own saliva? I don't even get the purpose of that part of your suggestion when it's obvious they could just use, you know, water.

I suppose Dwarf's Nest Soup would sell for millions, though.

That won't carry much. Let's put in cement first, that uses loads of sand as well. Water also, but that's why you have aquifers.

Sorry, while having your dwarfs live in a giant sand castle is somewhat of an awesome thought, glass is just dwarfier.

Yes. Clearly a bug that ought to be fixed in the future, but exploit it in the meantime.

Glass isn't a very good building material, though.

Adobe (and similar materials) would be great though. See: This and this.

How about the ability of bags of sand to act as... sandbags, usable for creating a water proof perimeter but otherwise easily destroyed?

However I do not see myself personally using this.  There is enough stone around to make a real wall.

If regular irrigation becomes a requirement for farms in the future, this could be really sweet.  Let's say that built sandbags keep back water up to a level of 3, any more than that and it will overflow, and provides a minor obstacle to movement, that'd be pretty sweet.

Sandbags could also be used to keep animals penned.

One could use bags of sand in a reaction for stone or cement, etc.

Personally, I'd LOVE to see pumice ash being used: build it like the Romans! 8)
