Mega-Beasts / Semi-Mega-Beasts.....
« on: May 27, 2008, 05:12:00 pm »

I'm reading what toady just posted in the development section....
http://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/dev_now.html

All i'm reading is that mega beasts cause destruction in the world.

To my knowledge, Mega-Beasts should have a alignment. Bad, Neutral or Good.

Rather then the mega beasts always attacking the people in the world. Maybe they could work together.

Each mega beast could also be set to like one race better then another, or not like a race at all and attack them, but leave other races alone.

I'm not getting into the technical stuff of what they can or can't do. But this is something to think about....

Lets say theres a Giant Spawned with a Alignment of being good. He would rather Help build homes for food in payment, rather then destroying homes and stealing the food. Only stealing food if he is starving to death. Maybe even protect the people he is helping from other Mega Beasts or any monsters that might be harming them.

I like Toady's idea that Megabeasts start off technically Evil, by evil I mean entirely willing to kill people and steal from them, and they can through interaction with other civilisations become good themselves (or at least benevolent towards that civilisation).

Though I guess what I can take from you is a need to diversify their personalities to noticable extents.

What i'm thinking is, if all the mega beasts are running around killing everything, thats going to make it a bit unbalanced? Eh?

Good and evil are too black and white for DF, I think.

Good and evil are just different perspectives to solving problems. It's too black and white to simply label things GOOD or EVIL. Is it evil that a Megabeast, by virtue of its size and appetite, must consume the flesh of large creatures to survive? It doesn't carry any malice in the act, it's just trying to get through the day by doing what every other creature does. Of course, intelligent megabeasts - even intelligent people - don't wake up in the morning and think to themselves "What evil can I do in the world?". That's boring and not how psychology works at all. Everyone's a hero to someone, and everyone does what they can to survive.

I could go on and on, but if you think the world can be so easily divided into good and evil, you're very naive.

Ok, well the whole point of this thread. Was to talk about the game not being made unbalanced by having mega beasts which only do harm.

A pocket world has already been made unbalanced. In the pocket world, only one mega beast gets spawned, what happens when a lot more get spawned in the big world.... The same thing if not worse.

The Problem wasn't that the Megabeast killed too much

The problem was that the (Semi)Megabeasts often got killed and have no means of reproduction

I still want (semi)megabeasts to impose their will upon nations/sites.  "I AM YOUR RULER!  GIVE ME LOOT!" etc. in various ways.  There's a dead thread on it somewhere.

What I meant is that alignment as an abstracted statistic is annoying, as DF creatures should be judged by their deeds.

I.E:  The rampaging ogre is always a jerk.   Obviously.

What if he's rampaging so that he can feed his starving family?

Then he's a hungry jerk   :p

In such instances, it would be nice if the intelligent (Semi)Megabeasts would hire themselves out to nations in exchange for goods (like food for his hungry Ogrelings). The nation would then have a chance to bring along said Beast during Sieges or Diplomatic missions, to either scare or impress the hell out of you.

Hiring certain beasties would be groovy and logical; especially since it's been shown via the bullshit function that they do speak.   And the idea of some farmers hiring a hydra to till their land is amusing.

That is made of giggles and candy.  Highly unlikely, but awesome.
