Designate stockpiles from cabinets/coffers
« on: March 14, 2010, 12:51:11 am »

An idea occured to me.

Right now, the primary means of creating stockpiles it to use bins.  The obvious advantage is that bins can be moved around.  At the same time, though, coffers/chests and cabinets are just as much storage containers (and judging from the notes for the next updates, so too will be armor stands and weapon racks).  So, the idea occured to me - why not allow coffers/chests and cabinets to be turned into storage rooms?

It would turn a previously decorative object into a legitimately useful one, and could also turn storage rooms that previously consisted of large, empty rooms littered with loose goods and bins into neatly organized rows of chests and cabinets.  The overall effect would be a little less visual clutter, easier access to storage (since coffers/cabinets can be made from rock instead of wood), and - personally, I think - it would make fortresses look a little bit more interesting.

If you're allowing armor stands / weapon racks to serve as weapon/armor stockpiles in the upcoming version (obviously, I don't really know the technical details of how this works), then it shouldn't be too hard to re-purpose the same code to work for other objects, minus the sparring behavior.

Q: What do you get when you take 100 clear glass windows, 1000 silver bars, 6700 gold bars, and 18,000 marble blocks?

A: A very large wall.

I like it.

A storageroom filled with cabinets for clothing, lots of chests/coffers for gems  ;D

Of course the biggest problem would probably be hauling if you decide to trade all of the contents but there are already several hauling related threads with some nice fixes.

I completely support that idea (albeit not novel, it has been mentioned before on the forum). One small caveat: designating from a piece of furniture ought to be replaced by designating from a position (x,y,z): that way, stuff can happen with the original piece of furniture without making the room disappear.

Dwarves could use extra materials to build racks. Most caskets, baskets, sacks, chests, bins etc. could be fitted with three on a rack, so that would triple the capacity. Some special types might require other storage types (notably armor and weapons; still, weaponry has been kept in barrels of oil against the rust as well).

Large scale storage would be more apt to use shelves that allow 2 or 3 bins per square. Cabinets, chests etc are really for more static, small scale storage needs like an armory or a treasury, not something you move around when they're full. However, I don't think bins are going to hold 10 halberds forever so this would be useful even for industrial storage needs in some fields

I see one issue with this:

With current stockpile, you can easily and quickly see how much resources you have at a glance. Coffers and similar items would obstruct view.

But being able to have actual storage rooms sounds nice. I could also see ability to designate closet from cabinet to create personal storage rooms for some dwarves.

Bins and barrels have the same issue right now, which indeed is quite annoying/dysfunctional. Maybe displaying the number of items in the center of large stockpiles 1/2 of the time would help (like the room icons on the minimap in Dungeon Keeper).

Maybe if we all want a stockpile to be a room, then the stored items could be shown at "t" view? And if there are coffers/bins/whatever, then it would look like bins in trade menu: the container and then the contests shifted right.
