How to Cross a river?
« on: March 04, 2010, 04:24:09 pm »

Does anyone know how to safely cross a river when you're actually walking around? I tried ALT-Moving but that did nothing and I fell down a waterfall and got massacred by carp.

Thanks,

well, you could use "T" to get to the over map, move one tile over and then hit ">", but that might be a bit overkill if you just want to get to the other side.

You might want to avoid waterfalls.  Also, try and find a fish-free area, if you can.  As long as you have a little swimming skill, you should be able to make it across with Alt and moving.

Alt-move into the water, and swim. Clobber any fish you encounter. Then climb out.

Fish are no big trouble when you're trained. Hell, I once leaped into a river just to try some dwarven fly-fishing.

'It is broken!'

Elves do it in trees. Humans do it in wooden structures. Dwarves? Dwarves do it underground. With magma.

And yeah, alt move IN the water (level down), not above, or you'll fall down and become stunned.

Thank you. On a side note, how does one equip weapons you have in your inventory? I've only been able to equip a new weapon by dropping my previous one and picking up the new one from the ground.

Equipping took me forever to figure out, too.
To equip a new weapon or shield, you first have to <p>ut away the one you're currently holding (or <d>rop it), than <r>emove the weapon you want from your backpack.
Hope that helps.

Edit: Also, if your weapon gets stuck in an enemy and you lose your grasp on it you can get hold again by wrestling with the opponent and selecting the embedded weapon. I'm not sure if you can pull the weapon out by grabbing it with an odd body part (your leg, for example) but you should be able to grasp it with your empty hand and it will be re-equipped.
Note that this will not unstick the weapon, just re-establish your grasp.

I once chased a school of about 70 different fish upstream, killing about forty of 'em. It was spectacular. Then I hit a brook, and couldn't go further. =[
