Teaching them to not to channel themselves into mini-islands would be nice.

Being able to hook power up to Ballistae and Catapults would be cool...
How about the ability to hook pressure plates up to them?
So link a pressure plate to the gear powering it...

This. Anything that lets us make epic Indiana Jones style traps.

Also, automation of sand collection. If no sand is available, the job "Collect Sand" should be queued up. Or, if sand bags < 20, then queue up Collect sand *20.

An incredibly complex machine is needed to create left shoes, and only left shoes.

Shoes for orphans? Can I incinerate it?

A dwarf's unfailing capacity to believe what he prefers to be true rather than what the evidence shows to be likely and possible has always astounded me. We long for a caring Fortress which will save us from our childish mistakes, and in the face of mountains of evidence to the contrary we will pin all our hopes on the slimmest of doubts. Gold has not been proven not to exist, therefore it must exist.
