Clouds and meterology
« on: February 28, 2008, 04:06:00 pm »

This is a suggestion that I would suggest holding off for a while.

Since we already have weather, why not rain?
Cloud coverage could be seen on a high-enough z-level, and dwarves could aim to build amongst the clouds.
A thought occured to me earlier that on a very very rare occasion in good areas a cloud carrying angels would drift over your fort, firing down at any evil creatures. (Hey, we have demons, so...)
In all areas (more often evil areas) thunderstorms could strike. While electrical rods could be used to harness electricity, thunder hitting dwarves would result in death. (higher-z-level dwarves and wearing more metal armor would increase the odds of striking them)
Tornadoes and hurricanes too would be interesting to see.

*You have been struck by lightning!*
Electricity burns your head!
Electricity burns your upper left arm!
Electricity burns your upper body!
Electricity burns your spine!
Electricity burns your lower body!
You give in to the pain
You have bled to death

Totally Dwarfy!

We has the raining and the snowing alreadys.
As for the other stuff I imagine it would be fairly difficult to code, but that doesn't mean I don't like it. It would be cool to see, I just think there are some other things we should see first.

As to that angel idea I think it would be a good idea to have them shoot at evil creatures, but let's say you routinely kill merchants, kill unicorns or eat kittens, then they could shoot at your dwarves.

A ray of pure good has pierced your cold black heart.
You have been struck down.

A lightning storm has broken out!
The Merchants from Circomptí Bevenél have arrived.
The Elven Diplomat has arrived.
The Elven Diplomat is struck by lightning in the chest! It is fried to a deep crisp!
The Elven Diplomat has been struck down.

Actually, wouldn't a dwarf in covered in full plate basically be a walking Faraday cage? Especially a full copper suit.

Maybe dwarves could wear rubber clothing to counteract that.

No.  Sure, the Romans discovered electricity, but they didn't know how to make use of it.  Hell, the Mesopotamians screwed about with electricity (even though they didn't really know what it was).  But it wasn't until 1600 when the English physician William Gilbert made a careful study of electricity and magnetism, distinguishing the lodestone effect from static electricity produced by rubbing amber (ref to. experiments of Thales of Miletos, 600 BC).  It wasn't until June 1752 that we find famous Ben out flying a kite.

Toady has already stated that anything after 1400 is a clear nono.

Only if it covers him from head to toe, otherwise it'll have to pass through the space between parts via the path of least resistance - which is the dwarf.

Very much like the lightning ideas.  That's tremendously dwarfy.  Specifically, you would be HIDING LIKE HECK in your little forest when it's lightningy out, and not going outside for ANYTHING.  When the weather clears, you rush back out to build some more aboveground while it's still safe...

If you want traders in a lightning storm, you'll want to consider building a covered path to your fortress--or at least some metal-tipped pillars lining a path, to keep the path safe.

I totally like the idea that weather should conspire to keep your dwarves indoors more often.

Stronger lightning storms in savage areas as well as evil, too.  Critters can keep to the trees, and be saved when a tree is zapped instead...Your dwarves out on the rocky flatlands are in trouble.

Maybe frequent lightning strikes in one small area could indicate presence of magnetite.

You could build a copper statue and place it on a hill to protect your dwarves.

Or build a metal road in the direction of the elven civilization.

What?  :)
