Just like we never intended to leave that eyeless, one-legged dwarf crawling through the fortress until they starved to death.

Mmhmm.

DF's graphics, even in normal text mode, are much more advanced than the standard Nethack. DF uses things like é and other strange and wondrous characters.

All hail the é, and it's strange wonder!

Not to be confused with the E for elves with their Unicorn mounts.  Which are not to be confused with hUmans.  Boy that would be embarrassing. *looks around nervously*

You need to make said elf leather into the most amazing work of art.  Embed it with every kind of gem you have, stud it with metals, and sew images into it.  Erect a shrine outside your fort with that in the center.  Let the elves know that you view their very skin as naught more but a medium for your dwarves to work on.

Mention the ASCII graphics don't needlessly suck away the budget so all money is used to make a good game, not a shiny game. (If you're confident he/she is fine with ASCII)

Nethack remember. It's only really a rung above Dwarf Fortress graphics wise.
Nethack is a rung faaar below Dwarf Fortress. Dwarf fortress's graphics are amazing to be honest. Even though its ascii think about all the animation systems, and how good crossbow bolts look when you fire them :)

You think I should recommend him to it?

Of course. It's silly to think that it would be embarassing to mention df to someone who plays nethack. Or who plays any game really.

Anyhow, shamelessselfplug with link you can give out if you are shy, see this thread: http://www.bay12games.com/forum/index.php?topic=49628.0

Except for the fact that Nethack has complete support for tiles...

DF has easy-to-get tiles too.
But the point is moot. Presumably his teacher plays NetHack with the normal letters, neh? He should be fine with regular Dwarf Fortress, then. Or tiles, if he really needs them.
