I think the fast, one battle endings to some of the antagonists in the Dark Tower are part of the theme. Roland battles many adversaries during his time. When he battles some lieutenant and cuts him down in just a few seconds, it drives home how much his enemies have to fear in him, and also displays the randomity of battles, since some survive and others die right away.

Also, Roland's companions go down pretty suddenly. They're living in a world where anybody could die at any second. I was still disappointed by Flagg's death, though.
