Free Pascal Compiler
« on: March 12, 2010, 02:21:37 am »

Okay, so I've got it installed and stuff, now how the hell do I run it?
I'm on OS X 10.3.9.

It was not helpful, but that does not change the fact that Panther is outdated. The latest version of the Free Pascal compiler does not even support Panther. Are you unable to use anything newer? Snow Leopard costs just 30 dollar.

Also, why do you want to use Pascal? Homework? Because I cannot think of a good reason to use Pascal elsewhere.

Have you looked into the manual? Assuming the compiler is in your $PATH, open up Terminal.app, navigate to your folder, type fpc $FILE, hit enter.

Some people don't have $30 to blow on stuff that they don't need bcause their current setup works fine.

Besides, it's not just $30, unless you already have Leopard. From Tiger to Leopard is $170. He still needs to get from Panther to Tiger.

Remember that Snow Leopard only runs on Intel machines. I'm pretty sure that 10.3 versions only run on PPC, meaning a 10.6 upgrade would be impossible either way.

Anyway, you should still be able to get at least an older version of FPC that runs on older versions of OS X, if nothing else. (There has to be an archive somewhere.)
Unless something magical has happened since last I looked at FPC, it's a commandline compiler, you write your code in a text editor, then fire up a Terminal and run the compiler from there. No GUI.
Alternatively, look into the Lazarus project.

I concur.  That's one annoying language + one annoying ide.

if you must work with it I suggest you open both Pascal and notepad++ (I assume it's compatible) or some other program that recognizes pascal syntax and allows you to work easily with it.  It'll update automatically everytime you Save in pascal and Pascal will also update the saved file with n++ everytime you compile it.  It's the only way to avoid going crazy.

The Snow Leopard upgrade pack upgrades Tiger to Snow Leopard without a complaint. I've done it.

Also, seriously: unless you're forced to use it for a class, there's no reason whatsoever to use Pascal. It is an antiquated language with no real modern faculties.
