Modding Wagons to Traverse Rivers/Oceans

Kind of a strange query, but I'm wondering if there is any way to mod wagons/traders so that they travel over water instead of land. Even if it may not be possible to force them to enter the map on water, I think it'd be easy enough to manipulate pathing to send them down the river into my town rather than over land assuming we can get them onto water.

This endeavor is complicated by the fact that wagons alone don't travel as a single entity but have work animals and escorts and liaisons and such. Maybe they could travel on land and the wagons in the water, separately?

The goal here is to simulate seafaring trade, the wagons being made to represent boats instead. I find this more appealing than overland travel, and I've got a curious urge to give my above ground city a bustling port feel.

Give them [AMPHIBIOUS]? Then again, you'd have to have [AMPHIBIOUS] wagon-pulling animals and [AMPHIBIOUS] merchants, not to mention that animals will not willingly path through water...

i dont think its the animals that auctally pull the wagon i thing the wagon is pushing the animals. although i could be wrong but i made this assumption when i was trying to fix a slow wagon useing dwarf conpanion
