FIXED: Main index file missing/corrupted
« on: February 21, 2010, 05:28:05 pm »

For a good while now I have been having issues running alternate downloads of DF which are not the current version 40d. DF folders I get from the Mayday graphics download and even the 40d16 version get this error when running dwarfort.exe:

FATAL ERROR

Main index file missing/corrupted. The file "index" must be in the "data" folder.
Make sure DF decompressed into its folders properly.

I'll do my inadequate best.

Is there a file "index" in the "data" folder?

I keep thinking glacier fortress would be fun, but it always ends up as cave layer fortress.

Did you install DF in Program Files on Vista?  If so, install it somewhere else instead.  If that doesn't solve it, try re-downloading whatever you're using.  Also, don't install new versions on top of old versions -- put them in a separate location.

Not installing it into Program Files worked perfectly, thank you.

Neato.  Feel free to retitle the thread to "fixed" or something so that Toady won't have to read it.
