Yeah, I always thought that this was a little bit out of balance.  If you recruit two of your original 7 embarking dwarves, just by practice-wrestling each other they can train all the way from Recruit to Wrestler to Elite Wrestler to Champion in less time than it takes the first caravan to arrive.

Yet if someone stubs their toe they can be bedridden for five years.  If only they played Adventure mode, they'd know traveling one single map square completely mends all bones and even internal organs in less than a day!
