Playing a Dwarf Mode "Campaign".
« on: February 16, 2010, 10:00:24 am »

So what I really want to do is make a series of Dwarf Forts on a single map in a "campaign" style of play. Specifically: I have genned a world, the civ is there, I want to work and expand the Dwarf Civ's influence throughout the world (then later play through adv mode but that's another story). The question that I have is -- say I have a successful fort, is it possible to stop working that particular site without abandoning the fort so that I can go somewhere else but leave that fort under dwarfy control so that when I trade with the dwarves later it includes the stuff that that fort can produce?

This is an Alder Omelette. All craftsdwarfship is of highest quality. It is encircled with bands of cheese. It menaces with spikes of bacon, ham, and peppers. On the object is an image of dwarves in egg white. The dwarves are eating.

No. Sort of.

The only way to end a game is to abandon/succumb to invasion.

Sometimes however, migrants will set up in abandoned sites.

It might be possible to make a variety of fortresses, abandon them, and see the refugees flee to previously abandoned forts.

Boooo.

Talk about a needed feature. :/

I'll just do it the old "Abandon Fort" way and pretend, I guess, but it won't make for as interesting of a story without it being certain that they'll live there.

Thanks much. :)

It'll probably work in future versions. You'll also be able to set up your own forts in adventure mode.

You could start a zoo and end up with a natural history museum, I'm sure no one would mind.

Yeah, judging by the arcs it looks like the concept is included in the County arc in a way. . .

Although, once you abandon the fortress, assuming you did not have anything too scary on the map when you abandoned and if the fort was large enough (150+ dwarves), generally when you come back in adventure mode most if not all the dwarves are still alive and hanging around. There's still a giant mess of all your stuff strewn about, and a few extra beasties, but usually nothing your military won't be able to put down quickly.

Basically, if you clear out the map before you abandon in my experience the fort lives on, even though it doesn't "Do" anything.

Now, if you say, didn't clear out the underground river and it was infested with zombie crocs, you might have a problem when you abandon.

I read somewhere that if you get the king/queen, when you 'abandon' your fort it doesn't actually get overrun, and you can visit it in working order in adventure mode.  Not sure if that can be repeated multiple times in the same world gen (i.e., the 'old' mountainhome may get abandoned whenever the king moves), but it could be worth a shot.

Is this true?! :)

Well, I've got a fort with a king, but I'm not ready to abandon it yet, I'll let you know what happens when I do.

King + abandon will keep your fort going, but I don't know about getting multiple mountainhomes...
