Masons traveling too far . . .
« on: February 16, 2010, 09:40:05 pm »

So I built several mason's workshops near the site of my planned tower, and gave them a nice big stone stockpile nearby, and yet they insist on getting all of their stone from the lowest level my miners are digging on, ignoring the stockpile right next to them.  What can I do about this?

I'm not entirely sure, but they grab stone in an outward circle from their workshop, irregardless of z levels. Once they clear out the stones from the area directly below the workshop, they should start on the stockpile.
Or for a quick fix, designate all of the stone in a radius larger than the distance to the stone stockpile to be dumped.

MMM___SSSS       M = workshop, S = stone, X = unmined areas
XXXXXXXXXX
XXXXXXXXXX          In this case, they will clear out the stone underneath the workshop until the radius cleared is greater than
XXXXXXXXXX          the distance to the stone stockpile up top. Which in this 2D example are the red ones.
SSSSSSSSSS
XXXXXXXXXX

Ok, thanks.  Sounds like the problem is basically that they grab the nearest stone "as the crow-who-can-tunnel flies" not according to the actual distance they have to travel.

Yeah, I've had that problem before, too, and it's really annoying.  Training siege dwarves tend to have that problem REALLY bad, in my experience.

I like "as the mole digs".
