protective environment suits
« on: February 13, 2010, 03:02:21 am »

while thinking of a way to build a fortress under the sea, i had an idea. why not have protective suits? like a kind of big daddy suit from bioshock to allow dwarves to walk underwater. maybe even have an magma equivalent to allow dwarves to walk under magma. they could even build cities in the magma itself. anyone think this is a good idea? It certainly be entertaining to see a suited wrestle wrestle a shark or whale under the sea.

This seems out of setting, but the way DF is I think this would be possible to mod in

Protective suits would probably be necessary to work anywhere near magma forges

not if the suits are made of wood or better yet stone, and explode if low quality. with enough hilarity added anything can be dwarfy.

Thats just armor, and I might be mistaken but armor as is works as a layer and separatea the creature from temperature, at least in cold environments

Maybe fire resistant aprons made from fire imp leather. Other than that  (waterbreathing or whatever) should probably wait for the magic arc.

a dwarf diveing suit is a bucket with a hose that air is pumped down.
(if the pump fails then the water presser forces the dwarf back up the pipe)
that or some thing along the lines of : John Lethbridge's diving engine, Essentially a wooden barrel about 6 feet (1.8 m) in length with two holes for the diver's arms sealed with leather cuffs, and a 4-inch (100 mm) viewport of thick glass.

edit:Diving bells are 4th century BC.

Agree, plus that's about the LAST thing *I* want to see from this kind of game - author spending valuable development time on useless graphics.

We just need the ability to build moving walls and floors. Then no special "diving bell" building would be required, we'd just construct one.

Of course, that would need to wait until after the disease/poison/extended injury arc, so that dwarves going Too Deep in a diving bell or whatever would get the bends.
