I imagine it's been done before, but my plan for my next fort is to create a hermitage, where not just one dwarf, but a multitude of dwarves will live out their lives in nearly complete solitude. I'll embark with nothing but picks and seeds, and then whenever a new dwarf arrives, he'll be allowed to take a pick from the communal pile, and get his personal farm going with the help of one seed. Then, he goes to live his life in solitude. Wish me luck!

Have fun! :) That's generally called the City-State Challenge, and I hear it's a fun spin on being a hermit.
