Is it possible to erase a fortress?
« on: February 16, 2009, 05:30:59 pm »

I've created a fortress on a site that I want to use.  I had some fun with water in the fortress, but I really want to use the site still without going into reclaim mode.  Is there any way to do this?

Reclaim is no different than normal.
Only change is that items on the map start forbidden and your dwarves start military-activated.
If you're scared of taking maybe 2 minutes to reclaim items and 15 seconds to press A a few times and deactivate your dwarves...
Seriously.
No difference whatsoever beyond that.

No, no way to restore a site to the natural beauty it was before your dwarves arrived.
Just live with the exactly-the-same reclaim mode.

Well, the big difference here is all the water that is now filling the fortress site that I really want to use.

look through your worldgen logs, find the seed used, and then regen the entire world with exactly the same parameters and using this same seed. This should give you the same world you previously had, while erasing all memory of your fortresses.

Ah ha!  Good thinking.  So simple, why couldn't I think of it?

That is not correct.  Reclaimed fortresses have serious and multiple problems.

#1 Volcanoes stop working
#2 Some items become non movable and permanent barriers on the land scape
#3 More stuff that I dont care to type out.

#4: forts under beaches are flooded, for no apparent reason.

I actually found a way to  do this. in the region folder, delete the file named "site-##" you still have to go to reclaim mode, but w/o all the stuff that was there. yeah, you lose some skills, but lose whatever f*ed up. Like in mine (reason i found this thread), i finally found the perfect site (magma vent on surface, river, bauxite, sand, iron, chalk, trees, ore), where i also learned about fire imps. I also found out that if you reclaim, thier numbers grow. so i had almost deleted my perfect world when i found out about this. hope this helps, if a bit late. By the way, just found this game a few weeks ago through the TV Tropes page. It's a freaking sweet game!!

1. Export the world's worldgen parameters.

2. Regen the world.

3. Start over completely from embark.

I like to backup a world as soon as I've genned a world I find interesting enough to play in, so that if I make a mistake in my embark, I can make it never have happened.
