Loaded ranged weapons in traps will "shoot" in the sense that the ammo is used, but the trap otherwise behaves the same way as it always does (it only hits creatures on top of it, etc).

A custom "laboratory" workshop that has a "research" reaction, with a very low chance to produce a technology, in the form of a floppy disc. These floppies could be freely copied at a computer station, and would be required to construct certain workshops. There would be various fields of research, some of which could only be pursued with the help of a previous technology. This works best in an "after the end" scenario, where your fortress is the only one left in the world, rediscovering technologies from scratch, assembling a society from aimless wanderers who migrate to the fortress, and defending your home from wasteland raiders.
EDIT: You could also have research sometimes require samples of rare materials.

I still think that the whole fortress should be flooded with magma the moment you try dividing by zero.
This could be a handy way of teaching preschool children mathematics.
