Reuseable Icecicle Crushing Trap
« on: February 09, 2010, 12:23:41 pm »

Is it possible to make a trap/device that causes water (pumped onto a "outside" square of a freezing envirovment) to freeze above a certain square (e.g. above that annoying goblin siege), but not actually be connected to any other wall tiles, causing the trap to dispense water which instantly freezes into ice blocks, which then crushes anything on the tile below?

Here's the side view:

-----------I             Legend:  - = un-mined square
water>->->F O                       I = wall/edge
-----------I                         O = Ice block that forms after water is exposed to freezing biome
                                          F = Floodgate
                                          G = Goblin/Spot where ice block drops
                  G
-----------------

Can this be rigged to work repeatedly without fail (ice clogging it up, or not falling as it forms)?

I demand this machine be tested out FOR DWARVEN SCIENCE!

Only you can find out and report on what happens.

Someone's made an automatic orcsicle maker, but it works by pumping water directly onto the orcs, where it then freezes. The difference being that your suggestion involves death by crushing instead of death by entombment.

The problem I see with this is that pumps need to be supported on their output tile, which I think means that anything orthogonally adjacent to the pump's output tile will also be supported. That would include any blocks generated by freezing the output water.

I'd change the design, as I think it would freeze and block the machine.

G                       H = Hatch or Grate or Open Space (not sure which is best)

The ice block would still stick to the "spigot."  Walls attaching that way is how you do an upside down pyramid.

X      X
  X  X
    X

Plus, if there's a roof over it, the area under the spigot would still be "inside."  No roof, and it would freeze before coming out.

Not really sure if it's at all possible to do a trap like that.  Even if you used a "mold" made out of floodgates, the ice block would stick to the floors that the floodgates rest on.  Drawbridges need a floor underneath the spot that turns into a wall when they raise, so those are no good either.

What if...

You had a pair of overhangs (U-shape), and then retractable bridges as the bottom of a pressurized water reservoir, could you  use the spreading of falling water to make this trap work?

I think the water would move horizontally before it moves vertically (I'm almost positive that fluids can't move diagonally across Z-levels), and thus it could freeze before falling, and stick to the walls and/or floors of the overhang.  Same problems as the originally posted design.

High pressure might help depending on how fast the water freezes, but it wouldn't be 100% reliable, it'd need to be unjammed periodically.

But it has to move out from under the overhang to freeze. I'm talking about...
Code: [Select]
.RWR.
.RWR.
.RWR.
.RWR.
.RRR.
Top view, R= Solid rock or wall, W=Liquid water in inside tile, resting on a retracting bridge.

Then, as the water freezes, you will get ice walls to the sides, but below that...

Hm. Have... I just figured out how to quickly make an ice pyramid/tower?

Oh, an overhang like that.  Now I see.

Side view for a single tile icemaker:

___________
WWWWWFS
XXXXXXXX  SO

S is spraying water, O is the falling ice block.

It would take some trial and error to keep the ice block from sticking to the overhang at the top (make sure the water consistently falls 1 Z-level before coming out from under it), but I think that design would work.  Yay!

Right, and have several 'sprinklers' with open space between them, to better cover the area.

Hmm.

I think it could be done. There will be side effects of wasted water, etc, but it shouldn't jam.

Couldn't you just make it so that it does something like this:

Code: [Select]
XXXXX
mmmmX
XXXmX
wwXmX
XXXmX
mmmmX
XXXXX

Where the X are walls... the w is water with the source to the left, and the second square over an open space
The m is flowing magma...

Of course this assumes that magma can heat water from the side, not just from beneath.....

Looks like Skid has the best design so far.  Of course, you'd still have the problem of creating an ice column, as ice counts as a natural wall.

Also, magma will not transfer heat through walls.  They're too thick.

What effect do supports have on fluid flows?  If fluid can occupy the same space as a support, you could have a support and magma underneath the kill zone, preventing ice from accumulating.

Well, I was thinking an underground river would be the ideal source.
