The King and Factories!
« on: February 08, 2010, 07:17:02 pm »

Ok, two questions.

1: I know that once you get up to a duchy, you get the incoming king entry and it tells you this stuff, but I'm trying to prepare in advance. Specifically with the road requirements, what I want to know is how much road do I have to build? (I'm using standard gabbro, granite, chromite, and claystone blocks)

2: Also relating to roads; What is the best way to set up a factory? My current arrangement is a stockpile for the blocks, a stockile for the desired stones, with all the workshops in the middle.

1. Should say how much road you need on the screen, but I believe it's about 5K dwarf bucks. Don't know how that translates into amount, but pave a road from your depot to the edge and you should be good.
2. Yeah, that's the best non-stupidly-micromanaged system I can think of; input stockpile, output stockpile, and workshop between them. There are a few exceptions I'll make, with cloth workshops next door to each other, smelters and forges side by side, but that factory setup is the one I'll use in future fortresses.

Yay I did something efficient! It's a miracle!  ;D

And I'll just churn out a big ol' road to the edge.

Depending on the size of your map, you may need a lot more than that. Note however that you don't need to keep the roads after the king's arrival, so if you want to increase road value fast, just make a bunch of squares of road from surplus metals.

I recommend getting the king's room set up in advance so your king does not instantly tantrum and kill himself.

Your king is actually a useful noble. He also makes no demands, but you will never get a replacement king.

As far as factories go, I prefer using a vertical stacking method. Minimizes the number of tiles a dwarf needs to walk. You can see this layout here:

Storage is either above or below the factory floor. The basic design works for above ground castles or underground fortresses equally well.

I was going to make roads with blocks but you gave me an idea to use that surplus copper for it rather than [/snicker]bolts[/snicker]
