Grates blocking miasma?
« on: February 02, 2010, 08:51:11 pm »

Didn't recall this happening in the first few fortresses I built, but in this one all of my grates stop miasma from going up or down. Am I crazy or is that not the way it's supposed to be?

Cleangales the grate of air cleaning, all air that passes through it gets filtered from miasma!

I really want that one as a "when". I want "grubs", and "virgin woman" to turn into a dragon. and monkey children to suddenly sprout wings. And I want the Dwarven Mutant Academy to only gain their powers upon reaching puberty. I also have a whole host of odd creatures that only make sense if I divide them into children and adults.

Also, tadpoles.

The air filters are made from discarded beards. Dwarven beards are so bristly, at the microscopic level they even catch scent particles.

I just tried this out with pine grates and two rotten turtles.

The miasma spread through the grates without effort. Both into open-air rooms and closed off rooms. Weird filter you got there. Look over the details, maybe this should be submitted as a bug.

edit: Come to think of it. It could also be submitted as a suggestion. With DF2010 coming up and one of the features being "inhaled poisons" it makes sense to combine say .. spider silk and a grate to create an air filter.

This is a dwarf beard HEPA filter. All craftsdwarfship is of the highest quality. It is encircled with bands of aluminum and menaces with spikes of cave lobster shell. On the item is an image of a dwarf in carp leather. The dwarf is coughing.

It may be his fortress setup, if the dump tile is Light Above Ground it might appear that the grate was acting as a filter but it was just the outside effect (rotting garbage outside does not produce miasma). So if you had shaft going down through all the layers to the outside (like an air shaft or anti-flooding drain) that was the garbage dump it would be miasma free but still in the middle of the fortress deep in the ground.

Just to be clear, was this done using floor grates or wall grates?

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.
