Can't add or subtract skills

Hi, I just tried playing DF for the first time, was following the tutorial, but I can't add or subtract skills? Like when I first start and went to prepare for journey, it says -+ to add/subtract skills but it doesn't work for me. They mean the "-" and "=" keys right? I've pressed every key on my laptop keyboard and it doesn't work. I also tried holding shift and pressing - and = but still nothing. Do I need to have a numpad? What am I doing wrong.

Press esc, and change your bindings.

The default ones are rather inconvenient on a laptop.

And to actually answer your question, yes, the + and - (and, for that matter, * and / which are commonly used for jumping between pages of some menus) require the numpad.

You could be out of embark money too.  Each skill point costs as much as the number on the right shows.
