Improving versatility of [LISP] tag
« on: February 03, 2010, 02:35:19 am »

Current state: Right now the lisp tag replaces the letter s with multiple copies of said letter.

Suggested state:
Replace with [ROLLINGLETTER:S:2]
The letter would specify the letter, the number how many duplicates are added.

This allows more breadth in different species speech whilst still allowing for existing use to continue.

As an addition to this, perhaps a [REPLACELETTER:L:R] style token, which will replace the former letter with the latter, for species who cannot pronounce the former letter.

I would like to take partial credit for this idea (woo, #Bay12Games), and to put my support behind it. It would be quite a neat thing to have.

[ROLLINGLETTER:S:2]

What about adding another part to the token; [ROLLINGLETTER:S:2:4]
The first would be the minimum of added S'ses, the other the maximum.
This way you'll have some variation.

Because that would get pretty ridiculous on double-letters.
LISP already overcompensates on double letters.

Edit: Unless that was accounted for and avoided.

While true, I think this thread has a better idea on how best to go about it.

It could always be set to [ROLLINGLETTER:S:2:2], by those concerned that it would get too excessive.

[liSP] is sort of a stopgap measure, I think, and improving it wouldn't do much in the long run.  Eventually, you should hopefully be able to write your own race-specific dialogue for everyone, which can incorperate stuff like hissing, funny accents, dialects, making weird noises, etc.

I want to make a race of Jägermonster-themed Orcs.  "Hy dere, liddle dorf frendz!  Ve haff brotchu dese enormous hats to trade for your rock mugz!  Dose tings are great for smashing de hedz during bar brawlz!"
