I'm probably not the first to figure this out, but I figured I'd post it to help those who had the same problem. Not long ago, I had an injured dwarf resting in her room. I thought nothing of it until she became thirsty. I checked on her to see if anyone was bringing her water and after a while it became apparant that no one was. Not wanting her to die of thirst, I decided to experiment. I selected her bed and freed it, then coverted it to a barrack. Lo and behold! Not long after that, a dwarf came by, moved her to another bed and started to bring her water.

Edit: I forgot to mention that I made the be a 1x1 barrack.
