Grave Digging
« on: January 30, 2008, 02:22:00 pm »

Attempting to build an imposing, 10 story mausoleum led to some issues, specifically that I had to build ceilings over a floor before coffins could be placed.  This sparked an idea: why can't we have dwarven grave plots?

Example: Have a miner channel a hole outside, and drop bodies into it - maybe covering it up and entombing them with dirt much like when someone dies in ice.  You could even drop coffins into it, or multiple bodies for the genocidal dictators among us.  Perhaps a Craftsdwarves would be needed to create an engraved stone block (tombstone) about the occupant to differentiate it from just a graveyard / garbage designation and count as an actual burial plot

This could even, possibly, lead to grave robbing in adventure mode.  If graveyards are randomly spawned during world generation, you could interact with the graves, or <g> over them to scrounge through the dirt.  Maybe a series of shallow graves in a haunted area could lead to zombies.

For now, I think I'll just start <d>umping bodies into holes and pretend.

You mean like using 'p' 'y' to designate a graveyard?

(Which I only discovered recently thanks to someone else on the forums)

I think that's what he means, but with pits, coffins and headstones.

You can dump bodies in channels, and then construct floors.

Doing a

-<y> for a graveyard is a current workaround, sure.  But it's not exactly ideal - it's just a garbage dump for dwarf bodies.  Personally, I get a real kick out of the idea of grave robbing and engraved headstones.  Add a bit of class to the dead, when you can't make that ornate gold sarcophagus yet.

YOu mean tjust throwing the dwarfes into a hoel in the ground. and then add some petty little piece of stone on top! Instead of a proper burial in a stone sarcofogous, ornate, and in a room full of engravings depicting the life of the comunity and the dead dwarf.

Appalling, what are you, a barbarian? No, we take care of our ancestors, they mined the first quarry, they found all these riches that you take for granted, and this is how you want to treat them.

Despicable.

I actually build mausoleums in the mountain heart. Have an entire city of the dead built with tombs, engravings, etc. separate entry from the rest of the fort, going 11 lvl down.

Had to wall in it though since a bronze collusus went down there to vandalise the tombs when everyone else had retired inside the keep. sent out the champions and now I have a masterpiece statue in the barracks.
