Fix for goblin clothes issue
« on: May 17, 2008, 07:07:00 pm »

I guess that goblins and other enemies actually wear clothes was intended, and is part of the whole insane detail/realism thing. Here is a solution to fix the goblin clothes issue without making them go naked.

Add a "Used" field to the clothes data structure. Clothes put on at least once are marked as "used", and their value is drastically reduced to the point that the player should have no reason to pick up used goblin clothes unless he is truly desperate. In addition all dropped used clothes are "forbidden" by default to prevent them from spamming hauling jobs. Finally, used clothes will simply rot away after one or two seasons if not picked up and stored somewhere / put on.

I like the suggestion. I also suggest that the dwarves hauled their worn clothes to the refuse stockpile after they've picked up / bought the substitution.

Another related idea: make them change clothes more frequently when the economy starts (maybe by increasing the shop capacity & allowing the 'Clothing shop' building instead of a 'Random shop'). Dwarves may get unhappy thoughts when forced to go around in tattered clothing.

How about this: goblin clothing stays on the goblin's body when the goblin dies, as if the goblin body is a container? Then there can be a simple toggle in the Orders menu: "Dwarfs collect invader's clothing" / "Dwarfs do not collect invader's clothing." When the goblin decomposes, leaving bones, any clothes still on the goblin could disappear. If you wanted to take it a step further, the option could be more complicated: a submenu (like for refuse) where you could toggle on and off the collection of clothing, armor, and weapons.

Hmm. Gory things happen in the wars Toady described ...
... though I doubt we'll get an option to impale Goblins on spears to line the roads to our fortresses. Crucifying goblins would save the narrow item problem ... but I doubt we'll get the d->G "Goblin on a stick" option   :D

Clothes already have wear-and-tear. If the chances of invaders' clothes being worn/tattered was increased significantly, that'd solve a big chunk of the value problem. (Hauling issues remain, sadly...)
