Appropriate Jobs Enabled
« on: February 03, 2010, 04:17:52 pm »

So, I've noticed that often, while a "Soaper" will arrive with only soaping and hauling enabled, a "Craftsdwarf" will arrive with woodcrafting, bonecrafting, and stonecrafting all on despite the fact that the dwarf in question may only have ranks in glasscrafting.

This means that unskilled dwarves will try to steal the forge away from my talented scum.

Was there a suggestion in there?

I think the suggestion is to not have dwarves show up with jobs they have no skill in enabled which does happen on occasion.

Better to set the Workshop Profile of the workshops in question to only allow experienced workers.

Dwarf Therapist kind of makes this a non-issue. I know it's 3rd party but....three clicks and they're unassigned. Plus some of the additional job assignments do make sense, like for Furnace Operator/Anything.

Dwarf Therapist runs on only one of the three targeted platforms, right?

I use dwarf manager myself and separate dwarves into various "castes."

Metal workers, craftsdwarves, jewelers, and peons.

Metal workers do all of the metal jobs. Craftsdwarves do all of the crafting jobs + carpentry. Jewelers work with gems obviously. They do not haul anything at all.

Everyone else does mining/masonry/farming/hauling/brewing/cooking/etc.

The peons are expendable. If I lose one its no big deal. If one of them manages to graduate to being useful, such as he gets a few mood and becomes legendary at a useful skill then he is removed from the peon work listing and put into one of the useful categories.

I use dwarf manager myself and separate dwarves into various "castes."

I assign each dwarf to a single skill and disable everything other than that skill, so that every dwarf will only do what he is best at and will be producing the best quality work all the time.

Haulers alternate between being wrestlers in the military (to build up stats and make them better fodder, since they're the ones who leave the fort to collect stuff) and hauling.
