Carp invasion!
« on: January 20, 2010, 08:35:30 pm »

Carp in Lake Michigan.  I moved from Chicago just in time -- it would be terrible to be just minding my own business walking along the lake, and suddenly get dragged in.  At least they have ladders all over the waterfront.

If I ever decide to go there, I'll bring my bone crossbow and *Steel Bolts [25]*

I doubt they'll allow magma on the plane.

Quote
CHICAGO — Genetic material from the Asian carp, a voracious invasive species long feared to be nearing the Great Lakes, has been identified for the first time at a harbor within Lake Michigan, near the Illinois-Indiana border, ecologists and federal officials said Tuesday.

It's an ASIAN carp! A dreadful communist sushi-hater! They are taking over The Great Lakes!

When I was on an epic adventure of moderate dwarvishness last year, I ended up camping here.

It was very nice, but the name Carp Farm did give me cause for concern. The carp in the lake were not small, and every time I went near the edge, the carp would look up at me threateningly. Vicious brutes. Needless to say, I camped quite far back from the water that night.

Morrigi: not very, at least for European carp (which are a blight here Down Under.) Their bones are weird and forky, and thus hard to get any meat off. Also, because they're bottom-feeders, they also apparently taste like mud.

They hadn't been spotted in the lake yet (and technically still haven't), just the Des Plaines river until the late fall when they got seen in the Chicago river.  I moved down the St.Lawrence, so I should be safe a few more years.  And when I visited this past weekend, my friends had enough booze on hand to keep me from heading to the shore.

Actually, in some countries carps are standard for Christmas Eve, and it quite edible. They are sometimes being sold alive from pools built at squares before Christmas, which makes me think about dwarfs, do they celebrate anything?

well: my embark site has no magma, so looks like it's time to increase my pollution output ;) (after all a dead lake means dead carp).

But not necessarily dead skeletal carp.  :-\
