FPS and crawling dwarfes
« on: January 20, 2010, 10:15:12 am »

Hello,
I just registered to bay12forum to ask this rather important question I couldn't find out in any wiki nor in any tutorial or video.
I watched nearly all capntducktutorials and was stunned after recognizing that his dwarfes are moving hell fast in contrast to mine.
So my brain developed these questions everytime I watched his videos:
How the f*** can they move that fast? His dwarfes are like racing jaguars and mine are like injured snails equipped with iron plates... Do I possess a really really bad PC (1,3 GHZ 512mb ram etc) or do I have to change settings in txtfiles for this? I am playing for about 10 days now (57 dwarfes, some ambushes, many workshops, some nobles and great stuff for trade and so on) and every day watching my dwarfes moving like drunken lazy snails...
Next question : Is this connected with FPS and how can I see how many FPS I got?
That's all for now, maybe some question about sparring later (Marksdwarfes do spar, soldiers and other guards don't do anything though not on duty and barracks available), but I am searching this thread for answers before asking this about 20 times.. :D
Thanks for reading and probably answering this...

Eff pee esses are a major problem with this game

Take a look at this page http://dwarffortresswiki.net/index.php/Maximizing_framerate

Thanks for the page, but are e.g. captnduck's fast dwarfes normal speed?
My dwarfes move about 2 tiles each second or sometimes 3...
Im gonna set now :
[FPS:YES], [FPS_CAP:100]:
in "\data\init\init.txt"
to see how fast my game is...
EDIT:
15 FPS at Starting Menu
7 FPS ingame
... thats not much I think... 100 is perfect.. 7 is around suicidethoughts...
So... I didn't even start the game and I got very low FPS... In general I have to set things off like weather and that stuff... but with that FPS without playing its nearly impossible to raise my FPS (without buying a new PC) , isn't it?

Oh and my version is v0.28.181.40d
I read in your link that there exist a version of DF, which "utilizes OpenGL much more effectively"...
What does this mean? :)
Thanks.
