Silver Ore
« on: April 01, 2007, 04:58:00 pm »

I know this is a minor issue, but it bothers me a little that galena is the ore for silver in the game. Galena is actually lead ore; silver comes from argentite.

I'm new here; I apologize if this has already come up.

The answer: new guy and DF are both right on this one.

Argentiferous galenas are the most important and prevalent source for mining silver.

By the way, welcome new guy!  :)

It's a good point but I think calling it galena is as good a thing as anything to call unprocessed silver ore.

Interesting! I didn't know that. I guess you learn something new about mining every day...?

Also, argentiferous is a really fun word.

Argentum is latin for silver.
Whereas Galena...

Yes it is lead sulfide but it often contains significant amounts of silver (And always contains atleast a little silver.). It is the most common form of silver found naturally (I think... I'll look it up.).

Oh and a fun fact about silver is that it has powerful bactericidal properties. Thats why silver has for a long time been used as a powerful medicine.

Is that actually true, or is that just quackery perpetuated by the whole silver water thing?

Both. Or, well, at any rate, there is a grain of truth, if ever so small. Be sure to bring you magnifying glass.

I heard that silver water can regrow limbs. Also, it attracts unicorns and/or friendly dragons.
