Choose Fortress Location - Moving the World Map
« on: January 19, 2010, 08:52:40 am »

I've run into an odd issue on the Choose Fortress Location screen.  When I'm selecting where to place my fortress, it seems like only a small portion of the world is available to be built in.

I get the three panes (Local, Region and World) and can scroll around on them just fine, but I can't seem to move beyond the bounds of the originally selected 16x16 world pane.  Furthermore, the [f]ind feature only seems to be active on that same 16x16 world pane - it won't search for sites outside that.

What am I missing?  I see an awesome world during world gen, but it seems to be locking me to an arbitrarily selection section of that world.

The world is broken up into regions consisting of 256 "embark tiles" in a 16x16 grid. You can only embark on sites that are entirely contained within a single 16x16 region -- no straddling regions. You can change which region you embark on, and you can embark anywhere within a region, so long as at least one embark tile is non-mountainous non-water.

The site finder will check each 16x16 region for you.

The reason you can't move beyond the bounds of the world pane is because that is all the world that was created. Everything that appears in world gen is there, sometimes it can just be difficult to find.

The moving pictures you see during worldgen are zoomed in, closer to the scale of region tiles or embark tiles than the tiles in the 16x16 world map.  So don't worry, you're not missing anything, it's just zoomed really far out.
