The biggest and well-balanced mod?
« on: January 15, 2010, 05:06:30 pm »

So, which is the biggest, most well-balanced mod out there? That involves new weapons, armor, toys, materials, creatures and civilizations?

People seem to like Legendary Lands a lot, and it's fairly expansive.

CivForge is pretty good; I used to play it before I started doing modding on my own (though I've done nothing nearly as ambitious as that). The biggest problem with it is that by default most of the new civs will come trade with you, which is often annoying. Some of the stones are not colored well (I think it's Verdenite which is green-on-black, which makes unsmoothed walls very hard to tell apart from floors) and thus look odd

The most popular big mod seems to be Dig Deeper, but in trying it I didn't like it much. The new animals just seemed too much to me, and not very well implemented; waterfowl especially just looked odd as they would actually swim underwater.

I personally like dig deeper, it adds a bunch of stuff.  Some of its new and interesting like orcs and Mithril, some of its just MOAR... moar gems, more food creatures, another type of indoor plant, etc.

I'm a fan of CivForge.
If the colours or the civs trading bothers you, they're really easy to mod out.
Dig Deeper is the best for cherry-picking bits from mods to assemble your own.
I've not actually played Legendary Lands, but I have heard good things.

However, the single most important mod is Molten Rocks.
It adds realistic melting points for pretty much everything.
No more worrying about Bauxite because suddenly, you can use other rocks like Alunite for your mechanisms.

I too vote for Dig Deeper. It's great.

Though currently my modded copy of DF runs Mega Mix. I like wacky adventures.

Dig deeper. All the complaints I've seen so far are tiny and can easily be modded in or out. Plus, it combines the best of other mods! Molten rocks, eco-stone, orcs, and, well, you know. And, like ein said, it has some things I don't really like, but others you can just plop into what you want to run.

The biggest mod is MegaMix, but it's crazy and is not mod per se, rather a bunch of mods which were thrown into a FEV vat and we play what came from another end, some kind of a crazy mutant :). Also there's no "balance" in DF. If you make it "balanced", it suddenly becomes too easy. Thus every mod has some difficulties here and there to make it funnier. Legendary lands is pretty deadly if I remember it right.

In any case, there's nothing bad at trying them all. You can look at feedback, files and run them a few times to get the overall idea, and it will be more useful than to ask others (at least it's my experience).

Speaking of which, I'd support any mod which revamped the current humanoid bodies. Doesn't your mod do that, Deon? (making the Jaw a separate part, among other things.)

I think everyone's opinion of what constitutes a good balance depends on their own special interests.  Trying to find the "best" combination of mod elements is one of the strongest incentives I've seen for learning to mod yourself.   :D

The most significant feature I like is the separation of upperbody in 3 (left torso part, chest, right torso part); it removed the "two lungs and heart were pierced by a single shot" situations.

I think the best way to have a mod is to make it for itself how you like :). But maybe not everyone agrees here.
