[40d][Resolved] Unplayably low FPS
« on: January 12, 2010, 01:22:42 pm »

I just stumbled upon, downloaded and attempted to play DF today. The game seems to be working fine, besides that the intro drags along at a horrid ~0.25 FPS. I've tried compatibility and Administrator modes, full-screen and windowed mode, deactivated/Learn-moded my firewall/antivirus... Tried the Aero compatability troubleshooting as suggested, with no luck.

For what it's worth, I have:
Windows 7 Professional 64-bit
AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 4200+, 2.20GHz
2GB DDR2
Nvidia Geforce 9500GT

Any and all help is greatly appreciated, thank you all in advance!

You could try setting Dwarf Fortress to run only on one core via the task manager.

You may have too many background apps running, so try to cut down on those through task manager. Before you try stopping any processes running, make sure you know it's safe to close them... closing explorer might be the worst of the bunch. 30 is about average for most people now.

Have you tried running any different ini settings?

Hard drive might need to be defragged if it's never been done.

That's about all I got at the moment.

Looking into modding DF? This forum guide & wiki guide may still be a good start!

That was suggested for people using 40d16, which you can obtain here.  That's your best bet for improving FPS.

You can turn the movies off with the init file.  Locate [INTRO:ON] and change it to [INTRO:OFF]

I've never tried it and there's a good chance it could make them freak out.

Are you using up-to-date video drivers (as opposed to whatever came with Windows 7)?

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

This.

The generic drivers in 7 may display fine, but I assure you, they are utterly crap.
Especially, ESPECIALLY, for OGL.
You should NEVER use generic drivers if you have a dedicated GPU.  Displaying the desktop != Working.

I snagged 40D16, which changed nothing (even had a lower FPS). I found the latest driver for my GPU (I'd been using the one from the CD, which might have even lacked Vista support), installed it, and it seems to work now. The intro was shorter than 5 minutes, and world creation took (FAR) under an hour and a half.

Issue resolved. Many thanks!
